Mid Century Home Restoration
Studio Vermilion is in process of renovating a Mid Century Modern house.
The house sits on a wooded hilltop therefore we named it The Ridge.
The Ridge was built by the Eggenberger’s in 1966. Imogene and her husband James raised their family in the home while ‘Jeanie’ ran her own businesses and ‘Jim’ worked for Ford Motor Company.
The design is a simple rectangular cube with a steeply sloped mansard wrapping the upper floor. Constructed of timber, brick, and shake, the design is symmetrical and uses large doorwalls throughout in lieu of windows.
Oct 1966
After the Eggenberger’s moved on, neglect overwhelmed the home for nearly 20 years and the structure was in critical shape.
As the woods closed in, the flat roof and “Juliet” balconies created openings that allowed water to enter and compromise the supports, floors and foundation. The unmaintained cedar shake patinated to green moss and English Ivy as thick as a finger established throughout.
Now nearly a year into the project, our mission has proven to be an arduous effort to save an artifact of modernism’s history.
This is our work in progress.
